For this puzzle design I wanted to capture the Tetris-like landscape of a big urban city like New York. I’ve taken a lot of my drawings I’ve done of buildings in New York over the years and combined them to give a sense of the city. You’ll notice that the super famous buildings aren’t really that prominent. Instead, I like to bring to the forefront the buildings of the everyday, the ones people actually live in and buy groceries at. I love how New York is a fully functioning place that people from all walks of life use constantly day and night and where some of these less flashy buildings are such a big part of that life.
James Gulliver Hancock is a well-traveled illustrator known for his playful illustration style. He grew up in Sydney, Australia, and studied Visual Communications at the University of Technology. In kindergarten he remembers devising the most complex image he could think of, refusing to move on to any other activity, and instead rendering a complex drawing of a city of houses including every detail, every person, and every spider web between every house. He continues to make drawing the primary focus of his day.
